Refrigerated Transport Toowoomba — Cold Freight for the Darling Downs and Lockyer Valley
Toowoomba is about 125 km west of Brisbane, up the range on the Warrego Highway. We run chilled, frozen and fresh produce freight both ways, including Lockyer Valley produce heading for Brisbane.
We run refrigerated freight between Brisbane and Toowoomba, about 125 km west via the Warrego Highway, and to the Lockyer Valley towns along the way. The work runs in both directions: food and groceries going up the range for the Darling Downs, and produce, meat and dairy coming down to Brisbane.
Freight for the Downs, freight from the Downs
Toowoomba is the service centre for the Darling Downs, so its supermarkets, butchers, cafes, clubs and food-service suppliers draw stock from Brisbane. Deliveries go to the city itself and to commercial areas such as Wilsonton, Harristown, Torrington, Glenvale and Drayton, and out to Highfields and Westbrook.
In the other direction, the region is agricultural. Meat, dairy and fresh produce leave the Downs for processors, wholesalers and markets on the coast. Having freight in both directions can make a run more economical, which is worth raising if you ship regularly.
The Warrego Highway, the range and the bypass
The route is simple to describe: west from Brisbane through Ipswich, across the Lockyer Valley, then up the Toowoomba Range. The Toowoomba Bypass carries heavy vehicles around the city instead of through it, which helps with deliveries on the western side, including the industrial and airport precinct at Wellcamp.
It is a regional run, with a steep climb for a loaded truck. We do not guarantee transit times, and urgent same-day jobs this far out depend on dispatch availability. Booking ahead gives you the widest choice of vehicle.
Lockyer Valley pickups between Brisbane and Toowoomba
The Lockyer Valley — Gatton, Laidley, Grantham and the farms around them — sits between Brisbane and Toowoomba and grows about 30% of Queensland’s winter vegetable crop. In the winter harvest, demand for refrigerated vehicles in the valley rises sharply, so growers and packers should book as early as their picking plan allows.
Much of that produce is bound for Brisbane Markets at Rocklea. Leafy vegetables are commonly held at about 0–2°C, but a refrigerated vehicle only maintains the temperature product is loaded at. Produce needs to be cooled before it goes on the truck. Continuous-run refrigeration is generally preferred for fresh produce because it keeps air moving through the load.
Not all produce wants to be that cold. Tomatoes, for example, are typically carried at roughly 10–13°C. Tell us the crop and your customer’s specification when you book the fresh produce run.
Sizing the vehicle for a longer regional run
| Load | Vehicle that typically suits |
|---|---|
| Butcher, cafe or small retailer in Toowoomba | Small truck — 2–4 pallets |
| Supermarket or food-service supply for the Downs | Medium truck (6–10 pallets) or large truck (12–14 pallets) |
| Packing shed or processor sending full loads to Brisbane | Semi-trailer — 22–24 pallets |
| Chilled and frozen stock for the same town | Multi-temperature trailer with split zones |
On a longer run, a part-empty truck costs more per pallet, so it pays to get the size right. The fleet page lists every class. Distance is one of several things that set the price; our guide to refrigerated transport costs in Queensland covers the rest.
