Refrigerated Transport Wacol & Heathwood — Frozen and Chilled Freight in Brisbane’s South-West
Wacol, Richlands, Heathwood and Larapinta form Brisbane’s south-west industrial belt along the Ipswich and Logan motorways. We move frozen and chilled pallets between its cold stores, manufacturers and distribution centres.
We run chilled and frozen pallet freight to and from Wacol, Heathwood and the rest of Brisbane’s south-west industrial belt. Most jobs here are dock to dock: pallets collected from a manufacturer or cold store and delivered into a warehouse, with probe temperatures recorded at pickup and delivery.
Where the south-west motorways meet
The belt follows two roads. Wacol, Richlands, Darra and Sumner sit along the Ipswich Motorway, with the Centenary Motorway joining at Darra. Carole Park, Heathwood and Larapinta sit along the Logan Motorway.
Large distribution centres operate here beside cold stores, food manufacturers and transport yards. From these motorways a load can head west to Ipswich, south-east to Logan and the M1, or north-east into Brisbane without crossing the city centre.
Frozen freight on a busy dock: the minutes that count
Frozen product is most exposed between the freezer door and the truck. The Australian Cold Chain Guidelines, an industry guide, put limits on that time. Ice cream is the strictest, because heat-shock damage cannot be reversed by freezing it again.
| Product | Never warmer than | Time out of refrigeration when handling |
|---|---|---|
| Ice cream | −18°C; −22°C or colder preferred | 20 minutes at most |
| Other frozen food | −18°C | 60 minutes in a +5 to +15°C anteroom; 90 minutes at 0 to +5°C |
| Chilled food | +5°C, and kept above 0°C | As short as the dock allows |
The Food Standards Code itself does not name a number for frozen food. It says food intended to be frozen must stay frozen. The product owner sets the actual limit, so put it on the paperwork.
- Pick and wrap early, stage late. Have pallets ready, then leave them in the freezer until the truck is on the dock.
- Expect a pre-cooled vehicle. We bring the body down to temperature before loading.
- Load with the unit off and the doors open briefly. The unit goes back on as soon as the doors close.
- Keep below the load line. Air has to pass over the top of the load to reach the back.
What the receiving dock will check
Under the Food Standards Code, a receiver should accept frozen food only if it is frozen hard, and chilled potentially hazardous food at 5°C or below. Food that arrives warmer can be accepted only if the transporter can show the time and temperature were safe.
That is why records matter. We read calibrated probe temperatures at pickup and at delivery, keep them on file and supply them with the proof of delivery on request. Our list of food safety questions for your carrier covers what else to ask.
If a load is refused or the slot is missed
A refused pallet of frozen food needs somewhere cold to go. Decide before the truck leaves whether a refused load returns to you, is re-booked, or is held.
We do not operate our own warehouse. We arrange cold storage and cross-docking through partner facilities, and space is confirmed at quote, so it cannot be assumed on the day. Give us a contact with the authority to make that call. Dispatch sends SMS or email updates at pickup, in transit and at delivery.
Frozen and chilled on one booking
A mixed order does not need two trucks. A multi-temperature vehicle holds frozen and chilled zones behind a movable bulkhead, with frozen product nearest the evaporator. Tell us the pallet split so the bulkhead is set before loading.
Smaller consignments can travel as a part load with compatible freight. Typical capacities run from 2–4 pallets on a small truck to 22–24 on a semi-trailer; the fleet page has each class.
Outbound from the south-west
Not everything here is inbound. We also collect from manufacturers and cold stores for delivery to shops, kitchens and warehouses across South East Queensland. Regional Queensland freight moves on planned linehaul services, and interstate runs are available on request.
Tell us at quote if an outbound run has several drops. The drop order decides how the truck is loaded, and every door opening lets warm air in. For frozen product, fewer and quicker stops are better.
Requesting a Wacol or Heathwood quote
Send the pickup and delivery sites, pallet count, height and weight, the temperature specification and any booking reference. We reply within 24 hours, often the same day for routine routes. For frozen work, our frozen goods delivery service page explains the handling, or ask us directly.
Q01
ServiceDo you deliver frozen pallets to distribution centres in Wacol and Heathwood?
Yes. Booked pallet deliveries into warehouses and distribution centres in Wacol, Heathwood, Larapinta and Richlands are work we do. We need the delivery booking, the pallet details and the receiver’s temperature and paperwork requirements before pickup. We confirm the exact site and vehicle when we quote.
Q02
ServiceDo you have a depot or cold store in Wacol?
No. We are a Brisbane-based carrier and we do not operate our own warehouse. Where freight needs to be held or transferred between vehicles, we arrange cold storage and cross-docking through partner facilities. We confirm what is available, and where, at the time of quoting.
Q03
ServiceHow long can frozen pallets sit on the dock before loading?
As little as possible. Industry guidance in the Australian Cold Chain Guidelines is a maximum of 20 minutes out of refrigeration for ice cream and 60 minutes for other frozen food in a cool anteroom. The safest practice is to keep pallets in the freezer until the truck has backed onto the dock.
Q04
ServiceWhat happens if a distribution centre rejects my chilled or frozen delivery?
The load has to stay cold while a decision is made, so agree the plan beforehand: return to sender, re-book or hold. We can arrange cold storage through partner facilities where space is available. We can also supply the probe temperatures we recorded at pickup and delivery.
Q05
ServiceCan you collect a part load of refrigerated pallets from Richlands or Darra?
Usually. A few pallets can go on a small truck or share a larger vehicle with freight at a compatible temperature. Whether that works depends on the destination and on what else is moving that day, so send the details and we will tell you how we would carry it.
